In 2017, Tata Trusts approved a project to upgrade Meherbai Tata Memorial Hospital (MTMH) from a 72- bedded cancer hospital to a comprehensive cancer care facility through investment in civil infrastructure and equipment.
The foundation laying ceremony for this project was done on 2nd March 2018 by Mr Ratan Tata and the hospital was formally inaugurated by him on March 13th, 2019.
Post-infra-structure and equipment enhancement, there has been a thrust to improve clinical services through the development of departments of Medical and Radiation Oncology and Palliative Care. MTMH and TMH together now provide comprehensive cancer care, covering the spectrum of diagnosis, chemotherapy and radiotherapy and palliative care. The hospital is ably supported by its diagnostic services that provide advanced imaging and test facilities. Daycare for chemotherapy is well established and provides patient convenience. Nursing staff have undergone focused training on oncological procedures and palliative care.
The palliative care unit funded by Suri Seva Foundation was inaugurated in February 2020. With an experienced palliative care team, including a palliative care consultant, medico-social worker, and trained nurses, the hospital works towards providing much-needed relief to cancer patients.
A four-bed ICU was inaugurated in December 2022 and is a boon for patients requiring critical care. The hospital is empanelled for Central and State Government welfare schemes for BPL patients and for Ayushman Bharat. Institutional and private donors also help in providing funds for treatment to poor patients. There are special funds available for children through the KMCO fund and for investigation and treatment support.
With the support of its well-wishers, MTMH hopes to establish itself as a level-one referral hospital for cancer patients in the state.
